My boyfriend has been experiencing some erectile dysfunction over the last five days and he is now being tested for diabetes. l am very aware that this can be a cause. We have had absolutely no problems with sex in the past at all, and he has had no mental changes - that is he gets aroused but his penis does not stay hard. l need to know if he does have diabetes will this problem go away once he begins to balance his blood sugar? l do not want any smart ass , we are very mature people who just wanna get our sexual life back to normal. Thanks a lot for your help.
oh and one other thing... please do not tell me products we can use to fix this. We wanna know the medical problem at this stage, and whether it is an on going or short term thing.
He is 20 this year also, so not very old, not depressed, not unhappy. We're both at a very happy place in our lives, particularly him. If it is something that can be dealt with thats ok, but l do not want it be to an ongoing or permanent problem.

Erectile dysfunction and diabetes - please help.

Erectile dysfunction is a symtpom of diabetes. If he is diagnosed he will have to control his blood sugar levels well to help avoid it getting any worse. The point before diagnosis would be worse than once he gets the diabetes under control. Your sex life should get back to normal once his possible diabetes is under control. Often people who have had diabetes for 10ish year will experience some mild complications of diabetes. One of these being erectile dysfunction along with many other complications.

I am a 19 year old female with type 1 diabetes so i dont personally know about erectile dysfunction (female sexual sensation can be altered) but i know diabetes inside out & it can be controlled & moderate & severe complications can be avoided. Best of luck.

Erectile dysfunction and diabetes - please help.

Well, how mature r you? Generally the first sign of diabetes is not going to be erectile problems, unless he is over 50 & has been undiagnosed with diabetes for a long time. Erectile problems occur after many years of high blood sugars, when the problem is due to diabetes (there r other causes).

If it is due to diabetes, it may get better as his blood sugar control improves, but it will not be ''like new'' since the damage is already done to the smaller blood vessels & nerves in the penis, & some of that can not be fixed.

If this is a sudden occurrance, it can be caused by many other things, such as depression(often overlooked in men because they do not ''seem'' depressed), some medications (like antidepressants), & other health conditions affecting nerves or blood circulation (high triglycerides, for example). If he is middle age or older, he may have had a drop in testosterone levels.

At any age, men can experience some termporary dysfunction for many reasons (so can women).

BTW, women also can suffer from diabetes related sexual dysfunctions such as less vaginal lubrication, less arousal, less sensation, difficulty acheiving orgasm, etc. It is not discussed nearly as much as it should be, even by doctors to their female patients, but it should be. The same blood vessels & nerves that r affected in men exist in women.
